RER NG, the new generation of Mass Transit

    The RER Nouvelle Génération (known as RER NG) is a train designed entirely for passengers in the Paris region, and specially developed in collaboration between SNCF Voyageurs Matériel and Alstom to meet the RER's Mass Transit challenges.

    The fourth-generation RER entered service on the E line of the RER in autumn 2024. Its design provides increased capacity and 25% energy savings, for ever more comfortable and responsible transport.

    Greater comfort for travellers

    The interior of the RER NG has been designed to welcome passengers in the best possible conditions. There are :

    • 1,550 seats, including 501 per train, i.e. 3,100 passengers in multiple units, including 1,000 seated. This represents 20% more seats than the current MI 2N EOLE trains;
    • Four distinct travel areas enable passengers to choose their sector according to their journey time.

    Increased accessibility

    In compliance with the requirements of the STI PMR, as well as a number of SNCF Voyageurs requirements agreed with the User Associations, we have notably installed 3 wheelchair spaces in the end vehicles.

    Wider doors also make for smoother boarding and alighting.

    Less energy consumption

    SNCF Voyageurs is keen to take account of current operating constraints, such as changing weather conditions, for the comfort of passengers and to ensure the durability of its equipment over time. On the RER NG, for example:

    • Higher acceleration and deceleration capacities under regenerative braking than previous generations of RER, notably in anticipation of semi-automatic operation under the new NExTEO signaling system;
    • Genuine air-conditioning (heating and cooling) whose operation is adapted to the occupancy rate of the train;
    • LED lighting that consumes less energy and is adapted to each moment of the journey (day, night, station stop).
